Joseph was favored by his father over ten older brothers. He got the fancy clothes and preferential treatment and apparently thought he deserved them. when he had a dream of his brothers bowing down to him, he told them. What could make such a boy grow up? In Joseph's case maturity came only through calamity. his resentful brothers threatened to kill him, then sold him to slave traders. As a slave he resisted ual temptation, and for his troubles was accused of and throw into prison. Yet he emerged with a wholly different character than as a boy. Summoned before Pharaoh on a whim, Joseph the prisoner behaved with confidence and tact. Pharaoh gave him a huge government program to administer, and he carried out his tasks with tremendous skill.
