Build you're own firearm?

I've seen these books for sale like "how to build a muzzleloading firearm" or "home constructed flintlock".Is it legal to actually make these things.I'm a DIYer,gun enthusiast,and I like to make my own stuff,so this would be a super project.I just wanna know whether it's gonna land me in a shitload of trouble.
